Intrauterine polyps, also known as endometrial polyps, are small growths that form in the lining of the uterus. These polyps are usually benign, but they can sometimes lead to symptoms such as abnormal uterine bleeding or fertility challenges. Many women may not experience symptoms, which makes timely diagnosis important, especially for those trying to conceive.
The exact cause of intrauterine polyps is not fully understood. However, they are commonly linked to hormonal fluctuations, especially estrogen imbalance. Polyps are more frequently found in women in their 40s and 50s or those approaching menopause, but they can occur at any reproductive age.
While some women are completely asymptomatic, others may experience:
Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding
Bleeding between periods
Postmenopausal bleeding
Irregular menstrual cycles
Infertility or difficulty conceiving
These symptoms often indicate underlying changes in the endometrial lining that require medical evaluation.
Intrauterine polyps can be detected through:
Pelvic examination
Ultrasound scanning, especially transvaginal ultrasound
Hysteroscopy, which allows direct visualization of the uterine cavity
Hysteroscopy is considered the gold standard for both diagnosing and removing polyps.
The most effective treatment for intrauterine polyps is hysteroscopic polypectomy, a minimally invasive procedure where a tiny camera and instruments are inserted through the cervix to accurately locate and remove the polyp. This procedure requires no external incision and typically allows same-day discharge.
In some cases, hormonal medications may be recommended temporarily to control symptoms or reduce the size of the polyp. However, removal through hysteroscopy remains the most reliable solution, especially for women planning pregnancy.
Early diagnosis and timely treatment help prevent complications such as persistent abnormal bleeding, anemia, and fertility issues.
