Adenomyosis occurs when the tissue that normally lines the uterus (endometrial tissue) grows into themuscular wall of the uterus. The displaced tissue continues to function normally (thickening, crumbling,bleeding) throughout each menstrual cycle. As a result, the uterus enlarges and painful and heavymenstruation can occur.
The cause of adenomyosis is unknown, but the disorder usually disappears after menopause. Hormonetherapy can help women suffering from severe symptoms caused by adenomyosis. Removal of theuterus (hysterectomy) cures adenomyosis
