Oligozoospermia is a medical condition in which the semen of a man contains a low concentration of sperm cells. Specifically, it is diagnosed when the concentration of sperm is less than 15 million per milliliter of semen. Oligozoospermia is a common cause of male infertility, as a low concentration of sperm can make it more difficult for a man to father a child.
There are several factors that can contribute to oligozoospermia, including hormonal imbalances, genetic factors, infections, and exposure to toxins or radiation. Some lifestyle factors, such as heavy alcohol or drug use, smoking, and obesity, can also contribute to oligozoospermia.
Symptoms of oligozoospermia may include difficulty conceiving a child, as well as a decreased volume of semen during ejaculation. However, many men with oligozoospermia do not experience any symptoms and may not be aware of the condition until they try to conceive a child.
Treatment for oligozoospermia depends on the underlying cause of the condition. For example, if oligozoospermia is caused by an infection, antibiotics may be prescribed to treat the infection. If hormonal imbalances are contributing to the condition, hormone therapy may be recommended.
In some cases, lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking, reducing alcohol intake, or losing weight can help improve sperm count and fertility. Assisted reproductive technologies, such as intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF), may also be recommended for couples who are struggling to conceive due to oligozoospermia.
It is important for men who are experiencing infertility or suspect that they may have oligozoospermia to speak with their healthcare provider to determine the underlying cause of their symptoms and explore the most appropriate treatment options.
