Egg freezing, also known as oocyte cryopreservation, is a process in which a woman’s eggs are extracted, frozen and stored for later use. This is usually done for fertility preservation purposes, such as to help women who wish to delay childbearing due to personal or medical reasons, or to protect their fertility prior to undergoing cancer treatment.
Egg freezing typically involves a course of hormone injections to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. Once the eggs have reached a certain size and maturity, they are collected through a minor surgical procedure under sedation. The eggs are then rapidly frozen using a process called vitrification, which prevents the formation of ice crystals that can damage the eggs during freezing and thawing.
The frozen eggs can be stored for several years and thawed when the woman is ready to conceive. When she is ready to use the eggs, they are thawed and fertilized using in vitro fertilization (IVF) techniques, such as intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), in which a single sperm is injected directly into each egg. The resulting embryos are then transferred to the woman’s uterus.
Egg freezing can be an effective way for women to preserve their fertility and increase their chances of having a biological child later in life. However, it is important to note that there is no guarantee of success, and the success rates of egg freezing and subsequent IVF vary depending on a range of factors, including the woman’s age at the time of egg freezing and the quality of the eggs. Additionally, egg freezing can be costly and may not be covered by insurance.
