Frozen Embryo Transfer

It's a technique used during in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment in which embryos that have been previously frozen are thawed and transferred to a woman's uterus at a later time.

Overview

Frozen embryo transfer (FET) is a technique used during in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment in which embryos that have been previously frozen are thawed and transferred to a woman’s uterus at a later time. The embryos are typically frozen using a process called vitrification, which rapidly freezes them to prevent the formation of ice crystals that can damage the embryos during freezing and thawing.

The FET procedure is often used to increase the chances of a successful pregnancy in women who have undergone multiple unsuccessful IVF cycles or who wish to use embryos that were frozen for fertility preservation. FET can also be used in cases where the woman’s ovaries are overstimulated during an IVF cycle, making it unsafe to transfer the embryos immediately.

The FET process involves preparing the woman’s uterus for embryo implantation by administering hormones such as estrogen and progesterone. These hormones help to thicken the lining of the uterus and make it more receptive to implantation. The frozen embryos are then thawed and transferred to the uterus using a thin catheter. The timing of the transfer is carefully planned to coincide with the woman’s menstrual cycle and maximize the chances of a successful pregnancy.

The success rates of FET vary depending on a range of factors, including the quality of the embryos, the age of the woman at the time the embryos were frozen, and the thickness and receptivity of the endometrial lining. However, FET is generally considered to be a safe and effective technique for increasing the chances of a successful pregnancy in women undergoing IVF treatment.
