Overview

Hysteroscopic surgery is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that involves the use of a hysteroscope, a thin, lighted tube with a camera at the end, to examine and treat problems of the uterus. The hysteroscope is inserted through the vagina and cervix and into the uterus, allowing the surgeon to visualize the interior of the uterus on a monitor.

There are several types of hysteroscopic surgeries that can be performed to diagnose and treat various uterine conditions. These include:

  1. Hysteroscopy with biopsy: A procedure in which a small sample of tissue is removed from the lining of the uterus for examination under a microscope.

  2. Hysteroscopic polypectomy: A procedure in which a small growth or mass called a polyp is removed from the lining of the uterus.

  3. Hysteroscopic myomectomy: A procedure in which a noncancerous growth called a fibroid is removed from the lining of the uterus.

  4. Endometrial ablation: A procedure in which the lining of the uterus is destroyed or removed to treat heavy menstrual bleeding.

  5. Hysteroscopic septoplasty: A procedure in which a septum, a type of uterine malformation that can interfere with fertility, is removed.

Hysteroscopic surgery is typically performed on an outpatient basis and does not require a hospital stay. Recovery time is relatively quick, and most women are able to return to their normal activities within a few days. Complications from hysteroscopic surgery are rare, but may include bleeding, infection, or perforation of the uterus.
