IVF, which stands for in vitro fertilization, is an assisted reproductive technology that helps individuals and couples with fertility challenges to conceive a child. It involves the fertilization of an egg with sperm outside the body, in a laboratory setting, and the subsequent transfer of the resulting embryo(s) into the woman’s uterus.
Here is an overview of the IVF process:
Ovarian Stimulation: The woman undergoes a course of hormonal medications to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple mature eggs. This is typically achieved through the use of injectable medications called gonadotropins, which contain follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and sometimes luteinizing hormone (LH). Regular monitoring through ultrasound scans and blood tests is done to assess the development of ovarian follicles.
Egg Retrieval: Once the follicles have reached an appropriate size, a minor surgical procedure known as egg retrieval is performed. It is typically done under sedation or anesthesia. A thin needle is inserted through the vaginal wall into each follicle, and the fluid containing the eggs is aspirated. The eggs are then collected and handed over to the laboratory.
Sperm Collection: On the same day as the egg retrieval, a semen sample is collected from the male partner or a sperm donor. The sperm is processed in the laboratory to separate the most active and healthy sperm.
Fertilization: In the laboratory, the eggs and sperm are combined in a petri dish or a specialized culture medium, allowing fertilization to occur naturally or through a technique called intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), where a single sperm is directly injected into an egg. The fertilized eggs, now called embryos, are incubated and monitored for development.
Embryo Culture: The embryos are cultured in the laboratory for a few days, typically three to five days, during which they undergo cell division and development. The embryologists assess the quality and progression of the embryos, selecting the most viable ones for transfer.
Embryo Transfer: The selected embryos are transferred into the woman’s uterus using a thin catheter. The procedure is usually done without anesthesia and is guided by ultrasound imaging. The number of embryos transferred depends on various factors, including the woman’s age and the quality of the embryos. Any remaining embryos of good quality can be cryopreserved (frozen) for future use.
Luteal Phase Support: Following the embryo transfer, the woman may receive hormonal medications, such as progesterone, to support the lining of the uterus and improve the chances of implantation and pregnancy.
Pregnancy Test: Approximately two weeks after the embryo transfer, a pregnancy test is conducted to determine if the IVF procedure was successful. If pregnancy occurs, the woman will continue to receive monitoring and care throughout the early stages of pregnancy.
It’s important to note that the IVF process can vary depending on the specific circumstances and the protocols followed by the fertility clinic or reproductive specialist. The number of cycles required for a successful pregnancy can also vary from person to person. IVF is a complex and emotionally challenging journey, and it is recommended to consult with a fertility specialist to discuss individualized options and potential success rates based on specific fertility factors and medical history.
