Laparoscopy surgery is a minimally invasive surgical technique that uses a laparoscope, a thin, flexible tube with a camera and light source attached to it, to examine and treat conditions within the abdomen and pelvis. The laparoscope is inserted through a small incision in the abdomen and allows the surgeon to view the internal organs on a monitor.
There are several types of laparoscopic surgeries that can be performed, including:
Diagnostic laparoscopy: A procedure in which the surgeon examines the abdominal and pelvic organs to diagnose conditions such as endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, or infertility.
Laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy: A procedure in which the surgeon removes cysts from the ovaries.
Laparoscopic hysterectomy: A procedure in which the uterus is removed using a laparoscope.
Laparoscopic myomectomy: A procedure in which fibroids are removed from the uterus using a laparoscope.
Laparoscopic tubal ligation: A permanent form of birth control in which the fallopian tubes are cut or blocked using a laparoscope.
Laparoscopic surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia and requires only a few small incisions in the abdomen. Recovery time is relatively quick, and most women are able to return to their normal activities within a few days. Complications from laparoscopic surgery are rare but may include bleeding, infection, or damage to nearby organs.

Each of our patients is unique and treated individually, and the schedule of doctors you see will be tailored specifically to your needs. Whenever possible, we create an integrated appointment plan, so that you can meet with the multiple subspecialists involved in your case. Some patients come here for a second opinion and go back to their obstetrician. Other patients transfer their care to Columbia as their delivery date approaches to make sure their baby immediately receives the necessary specialized pediatric care after birth.
