Ovulation induction

It's a medical treatment that involves stimulating the ovaries to produce and release mature eggs.

Overview

Ovulation induction is a medical treatment that involves stimulating the ovaries to produce and release mature eggs. It is commonly used in the field of reproductive medicine to assist women who have difficulty ovulating or who have irregular or absent menstrual cycles. Ovulation induction is often a part of fertility treatments such as intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF).

Here is an overview of the process of ovulation induction:

  1. Initial Assessment: Before starting ovulation induction, a thorough assessment of the woman’s medical history, physical examination, and hormonal profile is conducted. This helps identify any underlying causes of infertility and determine the most appropriate treatment approach.

  2. Monitoring of Ovarian Function: During ovulation induction, the woman’s ovarian function is closely monitored. This typically involves transvaginal ultrasound scans to visualize the ovaries and measure the size and number of follicles (fluid-filled sacs containing the eggs) and blood tests to measure hormone levels.

  3. Medications for Ovarian Stimulation: Ovulation induction involves using medication to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple follicles and eggs. The most commonly used medications are:

    • Clomiphene Citrate: This oral medication is taken for several days early in the menstrual cycle to stimulate the release of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) from the pituitary gland, which in turn stimulates the ovaries to develop and release eggs.

    • Gonadotropins: These are injectable medications that contain FSH and/or luteinizing hormone (LH). They are administered daily for a specific duration to stimulate the growth and development of multiple follicles.

  4. Ovarian Monitoring: Throughout the ovulation induction process, regular ultrasound scans are performed to monitor the growth of follicles. The number and size of follicles are assessed to determine the appropriate timing for triggering ovulation.

  5. Ovulation Trigger: When the follicles have reached a suitable size, a medication called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is administered to trigger ovulation. This ensures that the mature eggs will be released from the ovaries.

  6. Timing of Intercourse or Fertility Treatment: Following the ovulation trigger, timing is crucial for successful conception. Couples may be advised to have timed intercourse or, in certain cases, proceed with IUI or IVF procedures to increase the chances of pregnancy.

It is important to note that ovulation induction should be carried out under the guidance and supervision of a fertility specialist or reproductive endocrinologist. They will monitor the process closely, adjust the medication dosages as needed, and provide personalized care based on the individual’s specific circumstances and fertility goals.
