Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT) is a laboratory procedure used during in vitro fertilization (IVF) to screen embryos for genetic abnormalities before they are transferred to the woman’s uterus. PGT can be performed on embryos to detect genetic disorders, chromosomal abnormalities, or to determine the sex of the embryo.
PGT involves removing one or more cells from the embryo and analyzing them for genetic abnormalities. The most common techniques used for PGT are:
Preimplantation Genetic Screening (PGS): A procedure in which a small number of cells are removed from the embryo and tested for chromosomal abnormalities, such as aneuploidy (an abnormal number of chromosomes). PGS is commonly used to identify embryos with the correct number of chromosomes for transfer, which can increase the chances of a successful pregnancy and reduce the risk of miscarriage.
Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD): A procedure in which a small number of cells are removed from the embryo and tested for specific genetic disorders. PGD is commonly used to identify embryos that carry genetic mutations or disorders, such as cystic fibrosis or sickle cell anemia.
PGT can be performed on embryos created through standard IVF or Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), in which a single sperm is injected into an egg. The testing is typically done on the third day after fertilization when the embryo has developed to the 8-cell stage.
PGT is a powerful tool that can help couples who are at risk of passing on genetic disorders to their children. However, it is important to note that PGT is not 100% accurate and may not detect all genetic abnormalities. There is also a small risk of damage to the embryo during the biopsy procedure. Couples considering PGT should speak with their fertility specialist to determine if this procedure is appropriate for their individual situation.
